quick and easy baby gift idea

for even novice seamstresses, this is a quick, easy, and cheap project that you can do for yourself or give as a gift.

just about every mom knows that the Boppy nursing/feeding pillow is a must-have! and due to a registry misprint, i ended up with 3 of them at one of my baby showers. i took 2 of them back to the store, only to find that i could have used them afterall! so i made myself 3 more: one to keep in my car, one to keep at my mom's and one to keep at my mother-in-law's.

so when i found out that a friend of mine just had a baby and didn't get a Boppy, i made her one.

here are the instructions:

1. you will need about 1 yd of light to medium weight fabric, folded in half right sides together and pinned along the edges to keep in place. you will also need 2 bags of fiberfill cotton "stuffing" for the pillow.

2. the easiest way to make the correct shape is to trace a Boppy directly onto the fabric using a pencil. try to keep the ends, or "arms", of the Boppy spread apart by at least 3 inches.

3. once the entire Boppy is traced, you will make another line which parallels your entire tracing that is 1" out. you can do this easily by measuring 1" out in several points all the way around the first tracing, and then connect the dots to make the outer tracing. this outer tracing is your cutting line. the lines should not intersect anywhere.

4. before you cut, pin the fabric again, this time inside of the tracing. laying the fabric on a flat table, carefully cut through both layers of fabric, following the outer line.

5. with the fabric still pinned right sides together, begin sewing at 1/2" seam. start along the outer part of one of the "arms" of the "Boppy." sew all the way around until you are about 6 inches away from your starting point, leaving an opening. don't forget to backstitch your starting and ending points.

6. turn the fabric right side out, using a closed pen or the like to push all of the seams out. press (iron) the edges of the 6" opening down 1/2".

7. begin filling the pillow with the fiberfill "stuffing." make sure to press it pretty tightly together. the pillow should be very supportive.

8. once the pillow is completely stuffed, you will hold together the pressed edges of the hole and sew along the very edge of the opening with matching thread, until the hole is sewn shut.

and there you have it! for an extra touch, the pillow can be embroidered (between steps 4 and 5.) since the fabric is permanent, it should be spot-cleaned only, or covered with a blanket during feedings to protect the fabric from getting dirty. removable Boppy covers should fit your handmade pillow as well.

let me know how yours turns out!
